Elderly Safety: Reducing Falls and Slippage in Bathrooms

Bathrooms have been widely regarded as one of the most dangerous places in a household for the elderly. Unsupervised, they face the risk of tripping over misplaced objects, slipping on water puddles, and ultimately placing themselves in dangerous and precarious positions.

At A-1 Home Care Agency, our professional caregivers implement the finest safety measures to ensure that each and every patient is carefully looked after. By opting to hire an affordable senior caregiver, your loved one will be under close supervision each and every time he or she visits the bathroom or does anything around the house. Here are some tips that we recommend to maximize the safety of your bathroom.

Install Skid-Proof Surfaces

There are numerous types of skid-proof surfaces available for your bathtub, shower, and bathroom floor. Remember, individual pieces won’t suffice as they only cover a limited amount of space. Rather, consider looking into a mat for the entire floor surface or a rubber-backed rug.

Keep Your Bathroom Lit

Elderly individuals know that a good night’s rest is dependent on the number of times they have to get up to go to the bathroom during the night. Make sure that you implement different light fixtures – preferably those that run via motion sensor – to minimize accidental falls. Ideally, you’ll want to set them up at locations such as the entrance to the bathroom, by the toilet, and by a hand rail that’s used to prop them up.

Assisted Care Services

Remember, the elderly, especially those that are partaking in in-home care services, are in a vulnerable state once they get up in the middle of the night. For one, their vision isn’t what it used to be, which puts them in a disoriented state, bumping into objects on the way to their destination. This can lead to an assortment of injuries that can be unforgiving – especially at this stage in their lives.

With 24 hour caregiver services and a variety of other elderly home care options available at an affordable rate, let our team at A-1 Home Care protect your loved ones and provide them with the assistance that they deserve. When it’s Time to Take a Mental Health Day

Our caregivers at A-1 Home Care are some of the most hardworking people, putting someone else’s needs before their own. But, like our own senior patients, sometimes our caregivers need a break too. Working around the clock, being on-call for twenty-four hours a day, can certainly take a toll on one’s body. It is why we strive for our caregivers to be in tip top shape too, both physically and mentally.

Taking a mental health day is a must in order to prevent from burning out completely, which can often lead to illnesses if one starts to experience physical side effects such as sleep deprivation or exhaustion. People who take a “step back” or a “day off” may find different activities to mentally and physically recharge. Some common ones are sleeping in and catching up on those zzz’s that one has been cutting back on; watching TV from their favorite shows to movies all day; lounging which can consist of binge watching Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu; or getting outside to work out or visit the neighborhood.

Most importantly, taking a mental health day is a great way to reduce stress and studies have shown that doing so will make one get a lot more done when they return to their work and daily routine (The Huffington Post, 2016).

In-home Companion Service in Los Angeles

A-1 Home Care, an agency that looks after seniors who need some additional help around their home, makes certain that our seniors are satisfied with the tasks that our caregivers help assist with such as cooking, cleaning, and providing transportation needs to any appointments or the store. It is why our caretakers specialize in maintaining a lifelong relationship with their patients. We want to help as much as possible in regards to the safety and wellness of our senior patients.

Part of our agency’s mantra is to be more than a friend to our patients, but someone whom others can trust on no matter what. This is why our agency goes beyond than our caretakers just performing and fulfilling house tasks and running errands. Probably one of the most important job elements is spending time with the seniors. They bond, or hang out when there is downtime and sometimes not all of our patients can leave their home, both by choice and not by choice. This makes our agency also a companion service.

Some things that our caregiver and patients tend to bond over (some not listed) are:

  • Watching TV/Movie
  • Reading
  • Cooking
  • Baking
  • Gardening
  • Board games/puzzles
  • Knitting
  • Sewing

If you would like to hear more about our services, then be sure to check out our website www.a-1homecare.com or give us a call at 310-657-8780 or 562-929-8400.
